MARINA BEACH-WORLDS SECOND LONGEST

 The Marina Beach, is a popular urban beach covered with glittering golden sand and a clear strip of blue sea. It is ranked among the most magnificent beaches in India. Located at Kamarajar Salai Road, at a distance of 3 km from the capital city of Tamil Nadu, it is said to be the second longest beach in the world, extending to a length of 13 km from St. George Fort to Mahabalipuram. Any one visiting Chennai cannot miss this place.

The beach was converted into a tourist spot by Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grand Duff, who took the initiative during the 1880’s and ensured transition. Watching the sun rise and sun set is a great experience and breathtaking sight too. It is one of the most crowded beaches in India. Bathing and swimming are legally prohibited at this beach as the undercurrent of the waves are very strong.

The best time to visit Marina beach is during November to February, you can enjoy the place basically due to the climatic conditions in Chennai. You will feel the cool breeze and get along with the crowd to watch all the scenic beauty and the happenings in the crowds.

Marina beach attract a huge lot of Indian and Foreign tourists. You can escape the strong summer heat that engulfs the city. You have a whole lot of food stalls arranged with delicious varieties on sale. Snacks, hot fried, steamed items, ice creams etc. The ends of the beach are colonies of the fishermen.

The beach is a top venue for several marathon and walkathon campaigns throughout the year conducted for various cause. Multitudes of morning walkers and joggers are seen along the beach as it is an urban set up and the cool breeze encourages you to continue. The horse rides are a popular choice of young and old equally. The famous Ganapathi Visarjanam is also one along the banks of the beach under strict monitoring.

There are many historical monuments installed at the junction. Famous personalities like CN Annadurai and MG Ramachandran memorials, statues of heroes from Tamil culture, Indo Saracenic buildings, monuments of Tamil scholars, patriots and famous personalities including Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose. The latest inclusion is that of Tamil actor, Sivaji Ganesan.

The Famous effigy of the Triump of Labour by Debiprasad Roy Choudhary is a remarkable monument.
